It takes a village to raise a child
- an African Proverb
We mean that children start nursery with different experiences from others, in their play and learning, at nursery we support children to experience the Awe and Wonder of the world in which they live, through the seven areas of learning, to help them thrive and be able to achieve future successes.
The nursery is part of that “village” or community that helps the child grow, through experiences, a content community feel for both children and their families, feeling welcome, getting involved, feeling valued, sharing new experiences, an inclusive environment to all, with shared values and a focus for all children’s future success. Just a few examples below of how this happens here:
Parent and carers section
Children’s well-being is fundamental to good learning. So first we ensure that your child feels safe and secure and that he/she feels valued and of significance. You will find strengths are celebrated and weaknesses supported. Caring staff and generous pupil-staff ratios ensure that we know your child as an individual.
We use a variety of means to do this. We consider children’s individual learning styles. We offer extensive curricular and extra-curricular activities. We harness children’s interests and curiosity both indoors and outdoors. We invite visitors from outside the school to share their experiences and skills with the children and we take pupils on visits to the wider world. Here, at Little Lions Nursery our staff teamwork alongside parents to give our pupils every opportunity to make the most of themselves and to enable them to do a little bit better than anyone thought possible – to reach for the stars!
We have bespoke classrooms for all of our Early Years children that encourage free flow play. We believe that the parent is the first, the teacher the second and finally the third is the environment. We work hard to make sure the environment is stimulating and rich as this provides optimum learning opportunities.
All children learn best from hands-on experiences. We teach the fundamental skills of reading, writing and maths through daily play. We also encourage independence right from the start.
We believe that the Early Years Foundation Stage is fundamental in instilling positive dispositions towards learning. In Nursery, children play and explore, make choices and learn to have a go and persevere, are creative and solve problems, form good relationships and are safe, secure and happy.
All children at Nursery, have their own online learning journal. Tapestry is about capturing the magic of a child’s early years experiences. The staff at Nursery capture these photos then share them with parents through an online app/website. You will have access to a number of observations sharing wow moments from your child’s learning.
The nursery we have invested in the most up to date way to communicate with our parents’ and carers with Parent Mail. This is an online app/email service, which brings information to parents from the nursery in a fast, safe, secure and an environmentally friendly way as we are using far less paper to communicate with our families. All letters, notification, and forms are sent to parents using this system. Many schools use this fantastic system.
Little Lions Nursery has made its home in the building known to many locally as the Conway School, built in 1890 as a middle class all girls boarding school, with its boarding house in the building which Prezzo restaurant resides, it then went on to become the prestigious Conway school which was a private fee paying school for many years, after its closure, it then became the temporary home of The Pioneers Academy, whilst they were having their new school built across town. The school then became empty for a few years and fell into disrepair, until we had the exciting chance to take it over and renovate it to open it as the Little Lions Nursery. It is a beautiful building with big airy classrooms, and a great outdoor space.
co-curricular activities
Our co-curricular activities provide children with a wealth of opportunities to pursue their interests or try something new.
We aim to help children increase their confidence and self-belief while cultivating new abilities which may develop into lifelong skills and interests and which encourage them to take on new challenges.
Forest school offers our children the opportunity to make the most of the Great Outdoors. Once a week, the Pre-school year group are taught at little lions’ new, purpose built outdoor learning area and at times in the local park.
The outdoor sessions have been designed to give children exciting and practical experiences that enable them to gain a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts they have learned in the classroom. Learning outdoors encourages our children to think of learning as an ongoing process and that it is not limited to when they are indoors.
We believe that outdoor learning and the freedom that it offers has many benefits for our children. In addition to weekly visits to the outdoor learning site, children enjoy trips to the park, where their imaginations and creativity are stimulated by the landscape around them. Children come out of their shells and become more social as they feel less inhibited by all the space around them. We take great delight in watching them have fun making new friends and becoming more confident in taking part in games and activities.
Activities that children enjoy throughout the year as part of the forest school, keeping them healthy, alert and active include:
"At first, he could only count to 5, now he can count to 20, so there's definitely an improvement and he can write his name now"
"We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all the staff at Little Lions Nursery, you all do an amazing job, thank you all so much."
"Thank you for helping our daughter to settle so well"
"Her English skill are getting better since going to nursery, she is talking very good."
